How to read this chart
Data is based on IIHS data. Each point represents one model, body-style, and drivetrain series. The Combined study blends matched series’ rates using 33% from 2020 and 67% from 2023; unmatched series retain their original rates and year labels.
Driver rates concern the named vehicle’s driver. Other Driver rates concern drivers of other vehicles in collisions with it. The Total fatality rate is their sum. Rates are adjusted for driver age and gender and exclude passengers.
IIHS methodology does not include all vehicles. Only vehicles with at least 100,000 registered vehicle years of exposure or at least 20 deaths across the study period were included.
